How to pack the perfect tuck box...

School’s out for summer! We hope you’re all having a wonderful time with your families and making the most of the glorious sunshine. However, September will be here before you can say ‘are you absolutely sure you didn’t have any holiday homework?’ If you have a child starting boarding in the new school year, chances are you have a to-do list as long as your arm. There are so many things to prepare both practically and, often, emotionally.

Whatever else you find on your kit list, one of the enduring classics of the boarding dormitory is the tuck box. Ours come in a tantalising array of patterns and bright colours and all can be personalised to really add a sense of individuality to your child’s dorm.

Our lead time for a personalised tuck box is up to three weeks (though often less) so makes sure you get your order in soon to get it in time for the start of term.

We have some great tips of what to pack in your children’s tuck boxes to make the first few nights as happy and as special as possible. While the tuck box is overarchingly a practical item for locking away your valuables, we think it’s a great idea to start a little tradition of popping in a few surprises to put a smile on their faces.

  • First things first, as a ‘tuck’ box there have to be a few foodie treats in there. It’s a lovely thing to pop something in that your child really enjoys - perhaps some chocolate biscuits or their favourite sweet. Passing around a pack of custard creams on that nervous first afternoon is a great ice breaker. Yes, we all need to look after our teeth, but a little treat at this milestone moment won’t tip the balance! A word of warning, ensure you don’t put in anything that will perish and smell bad if it’s discarded at the bottom of the box until the Christmas holidays.

  • Some notecards, envelopes and a book of stamps. Yes, we all have email and phones but it’s fantastic encourage the old tradition of letter writing. Letters from home stave away the pangs of homesickness in a far more tangible way than a text message.

  • If they have a tablet or music device, make sure they’ve packed their charger and ensure they know to keep valuables locked up when they’re out of the room. Leaving a gift card for new music or e-books would definitely put a smile on a nervous face.

  • Wrap up their favourite mug from home and throw in some hot chocolate sachets for them to share.

  • A new pencil case is a must for the new school year - make sure they have something big enough to carry all their arty supplies, but small enough for their school bag.

  • Think about your child’s special interests. For example, if they’re sporty, a new hockey ball or racquet binding would be a lovely thing to find, an arty child would love a new sketch book and pencil set.

  • Make up a photo album with proper photos mounted in it with pictures of fun family times, pets and happy memories. These are lovely for those homesick moments, of which there will hopefully be very few!

We're offering free tuck box personalisation (worth £12.50) when you order between 24th-30th July 2017 and quote 'MyTuckBox' at the checkout.

Wishing you a wonderful summer and a great start to the Autumn term.

Get the most out of your Summer!

The burgeoning buds and cold snaps of Spring are but a distant memory as Summer has well and truly come to stay. We can find something to love about every time of year, but we have to admit, Summer has to be our very favourite. Not only are the days longer and (hopefully!) warmer, but there’s just so much to see and do. Gone are the days of whiling away the hours indoors by the fire - Summer is a time to get up and go out!

Of course, now is the time the ‘Season’ really kicks off. With Wimbledon, Henley Regatta and Hampton Court Flower Show coming up we’re spoilt for choice! However, this week we’re celebrating the magnificent Royal Ascot. Whether you’ll be showing off your hat in the enclosure or just having a flutter from home, you’re sure to be onto a winner with our Royal Ascot range. Full of souvenirs to remember a wonderful day, with teas, biscuits and sweet treats galore!

If you’re entertaining al fresco this season, why not have a look at our Pinterest Boards where we have plenty of recipes and picnic ideas as well as sneak peeks into our design inspirations.

Picnics are such an idyllic way to spend time with your friends and family; we have some tips to make sure you have as much fun as possible!

  • Make sure you pack in the right order so that you can get the picnic blankets, drinks and glasses out first. That way your guests can sit down and have a drink while you get everything else prepared.

  • Bring a wine cooler and thermoses for coffee, tea and even hot sausages.

  • Ensure you can spread out your feast buffet style to allow everyone to help themselves and to stop you have to get up and down endlessly to serve.

  • Don’t forget napkins, some baby wipes if you’re serving finger food and a bin bag to collect everything up once you’re finished.

  • It’s easy to get carried away with the catering, so keep it simple. After all if you’re picnicking at Ascot, money spent on food could be spent on betting! The late A.A. Gill wrote: ‘I reckon you want to spend about half the cost of your hat, which still leaves you plenty of money to lose your shirt.’

Wishing you sunny picnics and wins galore!

What does British Summertime mean to you?

As we begin to relax into the longer, warmer evenings, most of us here in the UK are starting to plan our summer outings. So many joyful activities are associated with British Summertime, it’s hard to pick between them!

Perhaps it’s fresh local strawberries with lashings of cream, shared with friends in the late afternoon sun? Or maybe it’s stretching out on a large picnic blanket under a tree, surrounded by family and enjoying tasty treats from a beautiful picnic hamper? For others, it might be taking a stroll through a summer meadow, enjoying carefree time watching bees drift from flower to flower, the cool, heavenly scented breeze making the meadow shimmer… We are truly spoilt for choice!

Of course, there is another quintessentially British summer event that never fails to entertain and delight…the world famous Royal Ascot!

The historic race meeting kicks off this year on Tuesday June 20th and runs through to Saturday June 24th. Ascot attracts many of the world’s finest racehorses to compete for more than £6.58milllion in prize money! A whirlwind of excitement, colour and glamour, every day displays its own personality and six world-class races.

If you’re lucky enough to be attending Royal Ascot this year, remember to check the style guide! This will give you a good sense of the types of outfits on display so that you can find your own perfect ensemble. Ascot-goers are famed for their incredible – and often eccentric – fashion choices, so embrace your inner fashion guru and strut your stuff in style!

If you’re opting for a picnic, be sure to pack your Ascot goodies into a picnic hamper or coolbox and of course, don’t forget the Bolly!

Keep your eyes peeled, too. You might just spot some royalty!

Easter

The roadsides are vivid with daffodils, the air is filled with the smell of toasting hot cross buns and the Easter Bunny is busy filling his basket. The year is tearing by and we can’t believe that Easter is almost upon us. Not that we’re complaining - any excuse to eat chocolate is fine by us!

Whether it’s some gorgeous oven gloves for the Jamie Oliver / Mary Berry in your life, a new water bottle for the kids’ adventures or a luxurious hamper for Granny, whoever you’re looking to treat we have the perfect gift! We have a great range of Easter gifts without the chocolate egg sugar crash. http://www.millygreen.com/easter-gifts

We’ve been thinking about what we’d like to get up to over Easter and cooking something special for the family is a must. This recipe from Frances Quinn would make a teatime to remember, so tie up your apron and get cooking. We think there might be a fair amount of spoon licking involved!

While chocolate is rightly an Easter non-negotiable, we always despair at the ridiculous amount our children end up with every year! How about getting the Easter Bunny to plant a few other surprises for them to find on Easter morning too? From doodle mats to water bottles and notebooks, we’ve got treats to make any child’s Easter special without the sugar crash.

Milly_Green_Blog_-_Google_Drive.jpgWhen it comes to the grown-ups, have a look at our Easter Gifts page for inspiration. We think our pretty British Summer Fruits and Summer Meadow ranges would go down a treat and, of course our Eggs range is rather on point for the season! All beautiful presents that will be loved and appreciated long after the Easter eggs have all been gobbled up.

If you’re looking for a bigger present for someone, forget putting all your eggs in your basket - what about a hamper? These beautiful gifts are packed full of Milly Green goodies, tea from the hills of Nuwara Eliyah in Sri Lanka, delicious biscuits baked here in the UK, keepsake tins and bone china mugs. The perfect Easter present!

Mother's Day

Here  at ‘Milly Green’art is in our blood. We thought Mother’s Day was a perfect time to celebrate the generations of talent in our family. Is the love of design and paintingsomething inherited or do we transmit our passions to our loved ones? As it happens, we can count Constable among our ancestors, so we think we must have paint in the veins!

We thought it would be fun to share some of our art works with you. Drawing and painting is a thread that draws us together and we’re sure you’ll agree there are some interesting similarities in subject matter!

From m
ice to elephants (with rather a lot of dogs in between) we often draw our inspiration from the animal kingdom. Of course, with two dogs, two pigs, twoguinea pigs and a cat in our menagerie that’s probably small wonder!

Milly is a prolific artist whose beautiful and characterful illustrations seem to come alive on the page (or apron or water bottle!). She never draws in the studio - her work is very much part of family life and she is most often to be found paintbrush in hand at the kitchen table, while spending timewith her girls, even in front of the odd Disney film!

Milly’s mother Rozanne is, like Milly, self taught. She encouraged Milly to pick up the paintbrush from an early age, and launched herself into her own artistic career once Milly left for University. Now she has a loyal following of clients for her animal portraits, recently a commission for the owner of no fewer than FIVE Dachshunds!

Tilly and Daisy have picked up the family baton (paintbrush!) and love to paint and draw. Here are some of Tilly’s masterpieces. We’re sure you’ll agree she has the makings of a grand master!

This Mothering Sunday why don’t you think about the things that link the women in your family? Is there a passion in your family which has been passed through the years? Baking, riding or music? A love of literature or architecture, even acrobatics or sky diving? Find something you love to do together and celebrate it!

We’d love to hear all about your wonderful Mummys and Grannys and even Great Grandmas! We’re always around to chat on Twitter @MillyGreenLtd. And most importantly: Don’t forget to get something fabulous for your Mum!  We have some beautiful gifts http://www.millygreen.com/mothers-day and as a special treat, just enter the code MOTHER10 at the checkout for 10% off your purchase.

Finally, a message from Milly to her mother : ‘Thank you for being such a brilliant mummy and wonderful granny. So incredibly supportive, talented, kind and generous - we love you. Happy Mother’s Day! Xxx’
